Usability Engineering vs. UX

What is the difference between usability engineering and user experience (UX)?
Two terms, one goal - but different roots and focuses.

Definitions

Usability Engineering ist ein systematischer, normierter Prozess zur Entwicklung gebrauchstauglicher Systeme.
User Experience (UX) umfasst die ganzheitliche Erfahrung von Nutzer:innen – emotional, funktional und kontextuell.

Origin and Development

Usability engineering was developed from the 1990s onwards (e.g. by Nielsen, ISO 9241) as a systematic method for improving usability.
The term UX gained relevance from around 2005, particularly through Don Norman, and expanded the focus to holistic user experiences.

Common Features

Important

Usability is part of the user experience - but UX goes beyond usability.

Practical example

An online store with clear navigation and fast loading times fulfills key usability criteria.
If it also appeals emotionally, generates trust and is used again and again, it offers a strong UX.

Conclusion

Usability engineering is a proven, structured discipline with a focus on measurable operating quality.
UX, on the other hand, emphasizes the holistic, subjective user experience.
Both approaches complement each other and should be considered as an integrated part of the design process.

Take Home Message

Usability ensures that a product works.
UX ensures that it feels right.
